An Overview of Puducherry - 2012

Puducherry is, a Union Territory with legislature, extending over an area of 479 Sq.Kms. comprising of four regions viz., Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam. The U.T of Puducherry consists of two districts viz., Puducherry District comprising of Puducherry, Mahe and Yanam regions and Karaikal District comprising of Karaikal region. There are 5 Municipalities and 10 Commune Panchayats. Total population of the U.T is 12, 44,464 as per 2011 Census. (Provisional).

According to Registration of Births and Deaths of Union Territory of Puducherry the Birth Rate per 1000 population as on 2011 works out to be 31.18 while the Death Rate is 8.55.The Infant Mortality Rate (per thousand live births) is 25.30 captured Under Civil Registration System. Where as according to Sample Registration System, the Birth rate as on 2011 in the Union Territory of Puducherry is 16.5 while the Death Rate is 7.0 and the infant Mortality Rate is 22 per 1000 live births. The decennial growth rate is 27.72 during 2001-2011 as per the provisional figures of 2011 Census

Total area under all crops during 2011-12 was 27483 Hectares. There are 77 Large Scale, 187 Medium Scale and 8444 Small Scale Industries in the Union Territory of Puducherry.

Under Revenue Account, the total expenditure incurred during 2010-11(Actual) has been ` 3540.14 Crores. An amount of ` 3326.16 Crores has been incurred during 2011-12(RE)

The Quick Estimates of the Gross State Domestic Product of Puducherry in 2011-12 (QE) with base year 2004-05 has been worked out to ` 14081.07 Crores at current prices. The Per Capita income for the year 2011-12 (QE) has been estimated at ` 98055/- and ` 81188/- at current and constant prices respectively

The Consumer Price Index for Industrial workers of the Union Territory of Puducherry stands at 216 during September 2012 revealing that there exists increasing trend of prices in the Union Territory.
