AN OVERVIEW OF PUDUCHERRY - 2011

Puducherry is a Union Territory with legislature extending over an area of 479 Sq.Kms. comprising of four regions viz., Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam. The U.T of Puducherry consists of two districts viz., Puducherry District comprising of Puducherry, Mahe and Yanam regions and Karaikal District comprising of Karaikal region. There are 5 Municipalities and 10 Commune Panchayats.  Total population of the U.T is 12,44,464 as per 2011 Census. (Provisional)

According to Sample Registration System, the Birth rate as on 2011 in the Union Territory of Puducherry works out to 16.5 while the Death Rate is 7.0 and the infant Mortality Rate is 22 per 1000 live births. The decennial growth rate is 27.72 during 2001-2011 as per the provisional figures of 2011 Census.

Total area under all crops during 2010-11 was 31,437 Hectares.  There are 77 Large Scale, 185 Medium Scale and 8326 Small Scale Industries in the Union Territory of Puducherry.

Under Revenue Account, the total expenditure incurred during 2009-10 (Actual) has been ` 3083.45 Crores. An amount of ` 3715.22 Crores has been incurred during 2010-11 (RE)

The Quick Estimates of the Gross State Domestic Product of Puducherry in 2010-11 with base year 2004-05 has been worked out to ` 12929.06 Crores at current prices.  The Per Capita income for the year 2010-11 (QE) has been estimated at ` 98,719 and `  79,333 at current and constant prices respectively.

The Consumer Price Index for Industrial workers of the Union Territory of Puducherry stands at 186 during September 2011 revealing that there exists increasing trend of prices in the Union Territory.
