An Overview of Puducherry - 2010

Puducherry is a Union Territory with legislature extending over an area of 479 Sq.Kms. comprising four regions viz., Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam. The U.T of Puducherry consists of two districts viz., Puducherry District comprising of Puducherry, Mahe and Yanam regions and Karaikal District comprising of Karaikal region. There are 5 Municipalities and 10 Commune Panchayats. Total population of the U.T is 9, 74,345 as per 2001 Census

According to Sample Registration System, the Birth rate as on 2008 in the Union Territory of Puducherry works out to 15.1 while the Death Rate is 7.7 and the infant Mortality Rate is 25 per 1000 live births. Based on the decennial growth rate 20.62 during 1991-2001 Census, the projected population as on March 2010 is 11,52,261.

Total area under all crops during 2009-10 was 31,910 Hectares. There are 75 Large Scale, 183 Medium Scale and 8141 Small Scale Industries in the Union Territory of Puducherry.

Under Revenue Account, the total expenditure incurred during 2008-09 (Actuals) has been ` 2570.48 Crores. During 2009-10 (RE) an amount of ` 3302.55 Crores has been incurred.

The Quick Estimates of the Gross State Domestic Product of Puducherry in 2009-10 with base year 2004-05 has been worked out to ` 11255.23 Crores (QE) at current prices. The Per Capita income for the year 2009-10 (QE) has been estimated at ` 82,767 and ` 69,704 at current and constant prices respectively.

The Consumer Price Index for Industrial workers of the Union Territory of Puducherry stands at 171 during July 2010 revealing that there exist increasing trend of prices in the Union Territory.
