An Overview of Puducherry - 2008

Puducherry is a Union Territory with legislature. The Union Territory, extending over an area of 479 Sq.Kms. comprises of four regions viz., Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam. There are 5 Municipalities and 10 Commune Panchayats. Total population of the U.T is 9, 74,345 as per 2001 Census

According to Sample Registration System, the Birth rate as on 2007 in the Union Territory of Puducherry works out to 15.1 while the Death Rate is 7.7. The infant Mortality Rate is 25 per 1000 live births. Based on the decennial growth rate 20.62 during 1991-2001 Census, the projected population as on March 2008 is 11,09,976.

Total area under all crops during 2006-07 was 35,943 Hectares. There are 71 Large Scale, 170 Medium Scale and 7757 Small Scale Industries in the Union Territory of Puducherry during the year 2007-08.

Under Revenue Account, the total expenditure incurred during 2006-07 (Actuals) has been Rs.1,92,702.03 lakhs. During 2007-08 (RE) an amount of Rs.2,22,742.76 lakhs has been incurred

The Advance Estimates of the Gross State Domestic Product of Puducherry in 2007-08 has been worked out to Rs. 8,12,884 lakhs at Current Prices. The Per Capita income for the year 2007-08 (AE) has been estimated at Rs. 63,524 and Rs. 35,734 at Current and Constant Prices respectively.

The Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers of the Union Territory of Puducherry stands at 747 during October 2008 revealing that there exist increasing trend of prices in the Union Territory.
