AN OVERVIEW OF PUDUCHERRY - 2009

Puducherry is a Union Territory with legislature.  The Union Territory, extending over an area of 479 Sq.Kms. comprises of four regions viz., Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam. The U.T. of Puducherry consists of two districts viz., Puducherry district comprising of Puducherry, Mahe and Yanam regions and Karaikal district.  There are 5 Municipalities and 10 Commune Panchayats.  Total population of the U.T is 9, 74,345 as per 2001 Census

According to Sample Registration System, the Birth rate as on 2008 in the Union Territory of Puducherry works out to 16.4 while the Death Rate is 7.5.  The infant Mortality Rate is 25 per 1000 live births.  Based on the decennial growth rate 20.62 during 1991-2001 Census, the projected population as on March 2009 is 11,30,921.

Total area under all crops during 2008-09 was 32,768 Hectares.  There are 73 Large Scale, 176 Medium Scale and 7947 Small Scale Industries in the Union Territory of Puducherry during the year  2008-09.

Under Revenue Account, the total expenditure incurred during 2007-08 (Actuals) has been Rs.2,20,059.30 lakhs.  During 2008-09 (RE) an amount of Rs.3,15,198.21 lakhs has been incurred

 The Quick Estimates of the Gross State Domestic Product of Puducherry in 2008-09 has been worked out to Rs. 11,77,357(QE) lakhs at current prices.  The Per Capita income for the year 2008-09 (QE) has been estimated at Rs. 84,625 and Rs. 58,755 at current and constant prices   respectively.

The Consumer Price Index for Industrial workers of the Union Territory of Puducherry stands at 165 during August 2009 revealing that there exist increasing trend of prices in the Union Territory.
