Introduction

The Government requires various kinds of information for planning for economic and social development on scientific lines and the statistical data goes a long way in helping the planners and policy makers in this direction. Without basic statistics, no useful and purposeful planning can be possible and therefore the Government looks forward to have statistical source agencies in the States/Union Territories with the idea of producing an exhaustive database which may cater to the emergent data needs of a dynamic economy.

The First Conference of the State Ministers of Statistics held at New Delhi on 5th April, 1981 has observed that the Directorate of Economics and Statistics have to play an important role at the state level so that the statistical activities of the various departments are properly coordinated, duplication in collection and compilation of data is avoided and accepted standards in collection, classification, processing and dissemination of data are uniformly adopted. For this purpose, the Conference has recommended that the Directorate of Economics and Statistics, the apex statistical organization in the Union Territories should be declared as 'Nodal Agency'. Accordingly, the Directorate of Economics and Statistics, Puducherry is declared as 'Nodal Agency' as per G.O. Ms. No. 89/82/F2 dated 22-4-1982 of Finance Department, Puducherry.

The statistics generally provides information on the socio – economic characteristics at micro and macro levels essential for the policy determination and is also used in scientific analysis and research projects. Moreover, statistical data are of great use to commercial, business and industrial sectors in regard to planning production and marketing of goods and services. It was in this background that the Government Of India have set up State Statistical Bureaus. Economies are turning global, Statistics is the veritable lifeblood of such an economy. Therefore, Statistics is to our economy what the heart is to our body. It had become necessary in the context of today’s rapidly changing socio – economic scenario, for the statistical system to cope up with an ever increasing demand for timely and accurate data. In this context, the Directorate of Economics and Statistics has an important role to play by ensuring that the statistical data produced are easily available to the users. In all, Statistics is the movement of the people, by the people and for the people. The Directorate of Economics and Statistics welcomes one and all and people can now enjoy access to some of the finest information solutions in the Union Territory of Puducherry.
